I’ve mentioned Oliver Burkeman in my essays more than I could count, and I refer to him even more to anyone who’d listen in my life. Up until reading his book ‘Four Thousand Weeks’, I believed that there wouldn’t be such a thing as wearing too many hats. The bar was set high between being a professional at work, a dog mom, a supportive girlfriend, a mindful friend, a reader, a walker, a home cook, and a creative being whenever downtime was to show up for me. I filled my notebooks with to-do lists, and even organised my days so that every minute would be accounted for. There would be no ‘windows’ for the unexpected, although the unexpected always showed up one way or another. Still, no matter how much I organised my time, I never managed to do everything I set myself to do, nor feel rested enough to produce anything of creative value. I know, what a shocker. This might as well be the premise for another well-intentioned self-help book on how to regain power over our time and well-being.
